OUR STORIES

Renosun Group has its humble beginnings since 2010 after years of intensive research in the field of solar photovoltaic (PV) solutions by the key principals. Our inception is around the same time when Malaysia enacted our Sustainable Energy Development Authority Act 2011 [Act 726]. This Act also introduced a Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) program (sale of electricity generated via solar PV to Utility Provider), which is administered and managed by the statutory body, The Sustainable Energy Development Authority of Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia) (as mandated under the Renewable Energy Act 2011 [Act 725]). That development was timely and hence, the Renosun Group applied to be the registered as one of the approved Service Providers that need to go through a stringent set of qualification criteria.

Since, Renosun Group has progressed into a leading player of the provision of consultancy, designing & installation of Solar PV modules system for residential, commercial & light industrial sectors. Todate, it boasts the successful installation of over 180 sites since the year 2011 throughout Malaysia. INAUGURAL OFFICIAL OPENING - SOLAR PV SYSTEM AT HOSPITAL LANGKAWI ...

This Solar PV system is built, apart from the stringent JKR specs, based on the newly minted LEED Design and Specs (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, an ecology orientated certification).

We are honoured to be chosen to build this Solar PV System and at the same time, gained considerable knowledge in building Solar PV structures and materials plus designs based on this new LEED Design.

It is arguably the first Solar PV System for Ministry of Health that is built and designed based on this new LEED Design.

Solar PV System

WHAT IS SOLAR PV?

Solar Panels or PV arrays are PhotoVoltaic cells grouped on a module. These PV cells produce energy by interacting with sunlight. So in order to understand how solar panels work we should first understand the basic facts about sunlight.

Sunlight is the energy released by the fusion process that takes place in the core of the sun. Anyone taking a sunbath could confirm that it is perceived as a combination of light and heat. The basic particles or units of this energy are called photons.

So we have these tiny energy packets called photons being emitted by the Sun. How are they converted into electricity by Solar Cells? An electrical current is the flow of electric charge from one point to another. Solar cells are made of semiconductor materials, mainly - and almost exclusively- crystal silicon.

This fancy-name material can be found in most electronic devices and it is what makes possible for energy to flow through computer chips. Due to its particular molecular structure, current can be carried either by the flow of electrons or by the flow of positively-charged "holes" in the electron structure of the material. We will explain this last point further below.

Pure crystal silicon is almost neutrally charged, so it would not function well to produce electricity. So other elements must be added to achieve a negative or positive charge, this process is called doping.

So there are two types of silicon that work together in transferring sunlight into power. The first is N Type (negative) silicon, which has been added with phosphorus and has much more electrons for photons to "break loose". The second is P Type (positive) silicon, which contains boron thus having free openings, or holes. Putting it simple: N type silicon has charge to give and P type silicon needs charge. The junction area has a thin slice of p-type silicon (wafer) that has been diffused with a n-type dopant (phosporus), or the other way around. One might think: if the two types of silicon are put toghether they would become balanced - neutral- again, but this does not hapeen due to the electric field that is generated on the junction. The electric field acts as a diode, making harder for charges to go from the N side to the P side and eventually balancing this diffusion. Also, it promotes charge flow in a particular sense.

At last, in terms of the electric process, the cell needs to be connected to an external load. Metal contacts are placed both on the n-type and p-type sides of the solar cell, and electrodes (electrical conductor used to make contact with nonmetallic parts) are connected to an external load. Thus negative charges travel to a wire, power the load and continue until reaching a p-type metal contact where it combines with a positive charges. Let's recapitulate:

    • The sun emits an electromagnetic energy that travels in the form of photons and hit the solar cell
    • Photons energy breaks doped silicon electron-hole pairs
    • The generated electric field on the junction pushes the electrons to the N side and the hole to the P side
    • Both sides are connected via metal contacts and electrodes to an external load which will transport the electrical current.

After all this there is an electrical current generated by the flow of charges and electrical voltage caused by the electrical field. There is power to sustain an electronic device.

However, the power a single solar cell produces is very little. Solar cells are combined within solar panels which in turn can be wired up in series in order to give off the required levels of power.

WHAT USES SOLAR PV? (SOLAR PV)

Solar Power can be applied in various ways to power electronic devices. On the consumer end, the main two are:

  • Powering stand-alone devices. There is a wide range of stand-alone devices that can function with solar energy. Oldest applications are on satellites and solar powered calculators. Today there are solar cell phone chargers, solar powered laptop chargers, security cameras, fountain pumps, road warning signs and a great variety of outdoor & indoor solar powered lights. They usually acumulate power on batteries to be able to function while the sun is down.
  • Grid-tied system. A Grid-tied solar system is made by installing several solar panels to give power to a house electrical system. On urban areas they are tipically installed on roof-tops. We'll explain further below.

HOW SOLAR POWER IS USED TO POWER A GRID-TIED SYSTEM?

Solar panels systems converts sunlight into DC (direct current) electricity. DC electricity is then passed onto an electronic power inverter which changes it from DC into AC (alternating current). The AC electricity is then distributed to the building’s power system which supplies the electricity. Excess power is diverted to the power grid which causes the electric meter to turn backwards and therefore credits the electric utility bill. When the sun is absent the utility power is used to generate electricity.

GOVERNMENT FEED-IN-TARIFF (FIT) SCHEME
FIT is the sale of electricity generated via Solar PV System to utility providers such as TNB. It is important to note that 100% of your solar power produced under the FIT scheme MUST be fed back into the main distribution grid and none of it may be used inside your home.

FIT is FIXED at the same rate for the next 21 years. So in 21 years time you will still be getting the same amount. Currently, the rate under this scheme is about RM1.00 per kWh of electricity generated for Residential Scheme and about RM0.89 per kWh for Commercial Scheme. The rate paid out is also dependent on the size of Solar PV system being installed. You may refer to www.seda.gov.my for more information.

Add up the cost of electricity you use on average, in your home and remember this amount will double in cost every 5 years. Example, if cost now is RM0.30c/unit, in 5 years it will be RM0.60c/unit, in 10 years RM1.20/unit, 15 years RM2.40 and in 21 years you will be paying RM4.80/unit. Add up the cost you will pay over 21 years and then add up the amount you receive under FIT. The FIT amount you receive is FIXED at the rate you get today and will still be the SAME in 21 years. Ensuring that the FIT amount you receive, is very much less than the amount you pay. Calculations on ROI do not include the amount you have to PAY for the electricity you buy from TNB, having disposed of your own Solar energy in exchange for FIT payment. There is no ROI with FIT system, you will always be paying TNB costs FOREVER.

FIT payment for 3kwp PV system will be RM500 per month today and still RM500 in 21 years but your RM300 bill from TNB will have risen to RM4,500 per month. Your losses will be very high and your capital cost is not yet included. If you add your TNB costs to the equation then your losses on the FIT scheme are very high and ROI remains an unreachable target.

Stand alone PV systems, by comparison, will mean you have no RM300 bill today and still have no RM4,500 bill in 21 years from now. Stand alone systems are more economical, for the consumer, not for TNB.

The peak demand of the power company occurs at mid day. In Malaysia the power company has more than enough power production to meet this demand and still has extra power at this time. Coincidentally, the peak output of Solar panels happens at Mid day, when the Sun is at its Hottest. So an Ideal, daytime solution is to put Solar panels on local houses and use this power to run your own home on FREE solar electricity.

STANDALONE SOLAR PV SYSTEM

A standalone system does not have a connection to the electricity "mains" (aka "grid"). Standalone systems vary widely in size and application from wristwatches or calculators to remote buildings or spacecraft. If the load is to be supplied independently of solar insolation, the generated power is stored and buffered with a battery. In non-portable applications where weight is not an issue, such as in buildings, lead acid batteries are most commonly used for their low cost and tolerance for abuse. A charge controller may be incorporated in the system to: a) avoid battery damage by excessive charging or discharging and, b) optimizing the production of the cells or modules by maximum power point tracking (MPPT).

However, in simple PV systems where the PV module voltage is matched to the battery voltage, the use of MPPT electronics is generally considered unnecessary, since the battery voltage is stable enough to provide near-maximum power collection from the PV module. In small devices (e.g. calculators, parking meters) only direct current (DC) is consumed. In larger systems (e.g. buildings, remote water pumps) AC is usually required. To convert the DC from the modules or batteries into AC, an inverter is used.

WHAT ARE THE KEY FACTS?

    • In remote locations, stand-alone systems can be more cost-effective than extending a power line to the electricity grid.
    • Stand-alone systems are also used by people who live near the grid but are looking for independence from the power provider or to demonstrate a commitment to non-polluting energy sources.
    • Batteries, and other additional equipment, are required with stand-alone home energy systems.

For many people, powering their homes or small businesses using a small renewable energy system that is not connected to the electricity grid -- called a stand-alone system -- makes economic sense and appeals to their environmental values.

In remote locations, stand-alone systems can be more cost-effective than extending a power line to the electricity grid (the cost of which can range from $15,000 to $50,000 per mile). But these systems are also used by people who live near the grid and wish to obtain independence from the power provider or demonstrate a commitment to non-polluting energy sources.

Successful stand-alone systems generally take advantage of a combination of techniques and technologies to generate reliable power, reduce costs, and minimize inconvenience. Some of these strategies include using fossil fuel or renewable hybrid systems and reducing the amount of electricity required to meet your needs.

In addition to purchasing photovoltaic panels, a wind turbine, or a small hydropower system, you will need to invest in some additional equipment (called " balance-of-system") to condition and safely transmit the electricity to the load that will use it. This equipment can include:

    • Batteries
    • Charge controller
    • Power conditioning equipment
    • Safety equipment
    • Meters and instrumentation.

WHO NEEDS IT?

There are many reasons for choosing an off-grid PV system to power a remote home or cabin. Some people want to avoid the high cost of extending a utility line, while others like the independence of homemade energy production, as well as having a silent, emission-free energy source with a 25-year warranty.

Off-grid (or “stand-alone”) PV systems are very different than batteryless grid-tied systems. Without the utility as a supplemental electricity source, a PV system’s sizing is critical. Off-grid systems require their owners’ participation—this means living within the original design’s energy budget, planning for future growth, and having a backup energy source for times of high energy usage or low solar production. All maintenance and equipment servicing is also done on-site, at the homeowner’s expense, and by the homeowner or installer—instead of by a power company.
